Dear friends,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Information Sciences and Technology at George Mason University. As you review this newsletter, you will see that the department is growing and thriving.  We have been increasing our faculty numbers, our student population, and our impact on the community.

In the last two years, we hired ten new faculty members and have plans to recruit ten more this year.  Our new faculty add both to the breadth and to the depth of our research areas in cybersecurity, medical informatics, and wearable technologies. Our students enjoy both face-to-face and online classes.  Despite the pandemic, we have continued our growth trend in enrolment and in the number of graduates per year, particularly at the undergraduate level.

To bring even more diversity to our already very diverse student body, we engaged in outreach initiatives such as Break Through Tech which aims to increase the involvement of women in computing disciplines.  We also continue to strengthen our ties with NoVa ADVANCE which aims to provide a streamlined pathway to obtaining bachelor’s degrees at Mason.

As a department in the newly formed School of Computing, we have been working hard to develop new master’s degrees and re-inventing the existing ones. We are excited about the opportunities and our future, and we look forward to continuing to share our news with you.
